In FY2017, SAKI awarded a grant totaling $2,075,142 to the New York City Police Department (NYPD). The department plans to use the funds to identify sexual assault kits (SAKs) that have not been submitted for testing to a laboratory. The NYPD will inventory and track unsubmitted SAKs, develop and report performance metrics, and update best practices related to evidence.
In FY2022, the NYPD was awarded $1.5 million to support the collection and processing of lawfully owed DNA samples from approximately 32,354 convicted offenders. Funding will be utilized specifically to complete a census of offenders, collect DNA samples, and process DNA samples in the NYPD laboratory.

Funded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance, the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative aims to create a coordinated community response that ensures just resolution to sexual assault cases. Through this program, funding is provided to support multidisciplinary community response teams engaged in the comprehensive reform of jurisdictions approaches to sexual assault cases resulting from evidence found in previously unsubmitted sexual assault kits.
