The purpose of a cold case review is to assess the condition of a cold case investigation and direct follow-up with multidisciplinary team input. A cold case review should involve information sharing for planning further investigation, prosecution, and advocacy services. This document outlines key procedures for the case review, and has sample checklists and forms to guide the review process. Members of any discipline can use this document to learn more about the steps of a cold case review.
Funded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance, the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative aims to create a coordinated community response that ensures just resolution to sexual assault cases. Through this program, funding is provided to support multidisciplinary community response teams engaged in the comprehensive reform of jurisdictions approaches to sexual assault cases resulting from evidence found in previously unsubmitted sexual assault kits.
